A stagnation and also a slight reduction in the population in the period 1920 to 1930 can to a great extent be ascribed to a large number of people who emigrated to America during this period.
Initially, there were only six major farms on Flekkerøy, i.e. Berge, Andås, Kjære, Mæbø, Lindebø and Skålevik. The most favourable harbours were those in Lindebøkilen, Kjærskilen and Mæbøfjorden. Mæbø expanded gradually and finally a store, a school and a church were built. In recent years Mæbø has had the largest increase of people, but also Lindebø-Skålevik is now expanding rapidly.
